Flower Sweep
From Full Guard: A Controlled Sweep from Guard
Key Steps
Step 1: Establish grips and posture
From the guard, secure the opponent's sleeve with your right hand and grab their pants/ankle with your left. Pull the sleeve across your chest to disrupt their base and secure control of their near arm.
Step 2: Create angle
Sit up slightly, turn your hips away from their head, and post your left foot on their hip to open space for the hook.
Step 3: Enter the leg hook
Swing your right leg across and hook the opponent's near leg with your instep, keeping your knee tight to their hip to control their leg.
Step 4: Execute the sweep
As you pull with the sleeve, drive your hips forward and let the hook lift and roll them over to their side. This is how you land on top in side control or mount.
Step 5: Stabilize
Clamp down with your grips, establish top control, then continue with the next jiu jitsu moves.
Application
Gi/No-Gi Adaptation
Works in gi and no-gi; adapt grips for no-gi by focusing on the sleeve grip and a leg hook without pants. This is a reliable bjj technique used across styles.
Mistakes
Common mistakes
- Grabbing the wrong grips and losing posture control.
- Not creating enough angle or relying solely on the arm.
- Failing to secure the leg hook, allowing them to base out.
Tips
Drilling tips
- Drill step-by-step with a partner; keep your head up.
- Maintain a strong base; use hip rotation to generate leverage.
- Not beginner-friendly; practice entry progressions to build the setup.
