Hip Bump Sweep
Full Guard Sweep: Basic Technique from Bottom
Key Steps
Step-by-step
- From bottom in full guard, secure control by wrapping your legs around their torso and establishing frames with your arms to limit posture (gi: sleeves or lapel; no-gi: forearms against shoulders).
- Create an angle by sliding one knee to their hip and turning your hips toward that side.
- Elevate your hips slightly and drive them upward to off-balance their base.
- Swing your legs across their body, guiding their upper body toward the mat and continuing the motion to finish on top in side control or mount.
Application
- Effective in both gi and no-gi; a fundamental jiu jitsu moves concept for regaining top control from the bottom.
- Use when your opponent overcommits or loses base.
Mistakes
- Losing frames or letting the opponent collapse the guard.
- Insufficient hip elevation, resulting in a partial or failed sweep.
- Not following through after the initial drive, allowing guard recovery.
Tips
- Keep frames tight and control posture first; consistency is key.
- Move with purpose; tempo should be controlled and smooth.
- Drill slowly, then increase tempo; this is beginner-friendly within bjj techniques.
