Bow and Arrow Choke
Collar choke from back mount (gi only)
Key Steps
Step 1 — Establish back control and grips
From the back mount, secure a seatbelt grip and control the opponent’s gi lapels with both hands to form a tight collar line.
Step 2 — Create angle and leg leverage
Angle your hips away from the choke and slide one shin across their torso to pin the upper body, preventing their attempt to turn into you.
Step 3 — Set up the lapel finish
With deep grips on opposing lapels, tighten the fabric to create a diagonal choking path as you rotate your torso and open space for the choke to finish.
Step 4 — Finish and secure
Pull the lapel ends firm and maintain the leg pivot to sustain pressure on the neck; keep your chest connected to their back to maximize control.
Application
This gi-based submission is a staple in jiu jitsu moves from back control and a solid bjj technique. It’s effective when you have a solid grip and proper hip rotation. How to: position, grip, angle, and finish in a step-by-step fashion. Not beginner-friendly; requires gi familiarity and comfort with back control.
Mistakes
- Gripping too high or loose on the lapels.
- Losing the angle by not turning the hips.
- Telegraphing transitions.
- Letting the leg slip or grips loosen.
Tips
- Keep shoulders square and hips rotated away.
- Use your legs to block the opponent’s hip movement.
- Breathe steadily and apply pressure gradually to avoid injury.
