Hand Fighting Escape
H2 Escape from Back Mount: Hand Control and Hip Movement
H3 Key Steps
Step 1: Base and neck protection
- Establish a solid base with knees bent and hips active; keep your chin tucked and forearms posted to frame against the opponent's arms to slow the choke.
Step 2: Fight for hand control
- Reach for the opponent's hands, peel the top grip away from your neck, and secure a stable control on one wrist or sleeve (gi) or on both wrists (no-gi).
Step 3: Hip escape and angle
- Bridge and pivot your hips away from the choking side, slide to the side, and create space to rotate toward guard or turtle.
Step 4: Re-guard or recover guard
- Once space is created, recover guard by pulling your legs back between you and the opponent or roll to your side into a sturdy turtle, then re-establish a grip.
H3 Application
Gi and No-Gi
- This is beginner-friendly and a staple in jiujitsu moves and bjj techniques; from gi, use grips on wrists or sleeves; from no-gi, control wrists and elbows and push away.
Step-by-step (how to)
- Follow the key steps in sequence during sparring to safely escape and re-guard.
H3 Mistakes
Common errors
- Not protecting the neck; ignoring hand control; failing to base; over-rotating; abandoning the escape midpoint.

Tips for success
- Keep the head off the choke line, maintain calm breathing, and practice the hip move in drill reps to build muscle memory.
