Rear Naked Choke
Back Mount Blood Choke from the Back
Key Steps
Step 1: Position and grip
- From back mount, secure a seatbelt grip and keep hips low to prevent escapes.
Step 2: Wrap the choking arm
- Slide the arm around the opponent's neck with the elbow tight and the bicep/forearm forming the initial compression on opposite sides.
Step 3: Finish (Gi vs No-Gi)
- Gi: If you have the gi, use the free hand to anchor by gripping the collar or sleeve to assist the finish while you maintain pressure.
- No-Gi: clasp the hands behind the head to seal the choke.
Step 4: Apply pressure
- Slowly increase squeeze by driving the forearm across the neck and tightening the bicep, keeping chest-to-back connection.
Application
- This is a foundational back-control submission in jiu jitsu moves, effective in gi and no-gi and suitable for beginners when done with proper control.
Mistakes
- Common errors include loosening the grip, flaring the elbow, failing to control the opponent's hips, or letting the head turn and reduce pressure.
Tips
- Keep your chest flat against the back, elbows tight, and hips anchored. Start light and progress to deeper pressure only with instructor supervision. This is a staple bjj technique for beginners and a core component of advanced jiu jitsu moves.
