Triangle Choke
From Full Guard: Leg-Entanglement Submission
Key Steps
Step 1: Break posture and establish base
From the guard, hinge your hips and pull the opponent's head toward you while keeping your knees tight. Control the near-side arm to limit their posturing options.
Step 2: Isolate the head and arm
Using the leg that crosses toward the neck, press the head down and pull the opponent's near arm across their chest, pinning it with your thigh.
Step 3: Form the neck-encircling leg configuration
Swing your other leg over the back of the opponent's neck and secure the shin behind the knee so both legs encircle the neck and arm.
Step 4: Finish and secure
Squeeze your knees together, press your thighs to compress the carotids, and lift your hips slightly to increase pressure. Maintain control and encourage a tap.
Application
This blood-flow submission from the full guard is a fundamental bjj technique that works in Gi or No-Gi. Use when your opponent's posture breaks, or they over-commit to a pass, to create a tight finish. It is a core technique in jiujitsu moves and bjj techniques and is approachable for beginners with proper supervision; progress through step-by-step drilling.
Mistakes
- Not controlling the head or arm; relying on arm strength instead of leg pressure.
- Poor angle or failing to shift hips to create a clean encirclement.
- Allowing the opponent to stack or post and escape.
- Over-gripping with the hands instead of using leg compression.
Tips
- Build hip mobility and leg squeeze for stronger pressure.
- Keep the opponent's shoulder oriented toward your chest to prevent escape.
- Practice with a training partner and a coach to ensure safe tapping.
