Cross Collar Choke
From the Full Mount: Gi-Based Collar Submission
Key Steps
-
Step 1: Set the grips
From the mount, reach for both sides of the opponent’s gi near the neck. Grab the collars with both hands, thumbs inside, wrists flat, elbows tucked. -
Step 2: Lock and align
Bring your elbows in and slide your forearms across the sides of the neck to position the fabric as leverage on each carotid. Maintain tight, symmetrical grips. -
Step 3: Finish with controlled pressure
Squeeze the collars toward the center and pull the heads slightly down. Apply even pressure on both sides while keeping your weight heavy on top. -
Step 4: Hold and monitor safety
Maintain control until the opponent taps or you’re ready to safely release.
Application
-
Setup and control
Use the mount to control posture and gradually isolate the neck with gi grips. This is a step-by-step approach that is common in jiu jitsu moves and bjj techniques.
Mistakes
-
Poor grip or alignment
Gripping too high or too loose makes the choke ineffective. Keep both collars secured. -
Losing mount control
Letting the opponent bridge or turn can create escapes. -
Over- or under-pressing
Too much pressure risks injury; too little fails to finish.
Tips
-
Keep hips heavy
Drive weight with your hips to maintain top control. -
Practice safely
Train with supervision and release immediately if breathing is compromised. -
Beginner-friendly
When practiced with proper supervision, this gi-based technique is approachable for beginners and a solid addition to jiu jitsu moves and bjj techniques.
