Backward Roll Escape
From Side Control: Roll Escape to Reclaim Space
Key Steps
Step 1: Create space with a bump
- Establish a solid frame by placing your near-side forearm across the opponent's head and your far-side hand on their chest. Give a small bump with the head or shoulder to disrupt their base and open a lane.
- Keep the elbow in and your head on the inside to protect your neck while you widen the space.
Step 2: Initiate the roll
- Pivot your hips and shoulder toward the mat, tucking your chin and rolling over the near shoulder.
- Use the momentum to slide your legs toward the hips, keeping your knees engaged to guide the path.
Step 3: Reclaim guard
- As you complete the roll, bring your knees in between you and the opponent and establish guard (closed or open) based on grips.
- Posture up and reset your grips to continue attack or control.
Application
- Creates space from heavy side control pressure and provides a safe path to re-establish guard in gi or no-gi.
- Suitable for beginners with proper coaching; a practical, step-by-step component of jiu jitsu moves and bjj techniques.
Mistakes
- Not creating enough space with the bump or failing to establish frames, allowing pressure to stay.
- Rolling too flat or away, missing the re-positioning window.
- Forgetting to protect the neck or losing hip mobility during the roll.
Tips
- Keep elbows tight and frames active; use your hips to drive the roll.
- Practice at slow tempo first, then increase speed as timing improves.
- Drill with a partner focusing on safety and proper posture.
This sequence is a practical example of jiu jitsu moves aimed at escaping side control and preserving guard; a core part of bjj techniques repertoire for both gi and no-gi practitioners.
