D'Arce Choke
Arm-in Choke from Side Control
Key Steps
Setup
- From side control, establish a solid base with hips heavy and chest over the opponent; head turned to the side to create space for the neck.
- Control the near arm to limit escapes and create a clear path for threading around the neck.
Entry
- Slide your near arm under the opponent's armpit and around their neck, threading toward your chest.
- With the opposite hand, reach behind their head and secure a grip (gable grip on your choking arm or lock your hands together).
Lock
- Keep the choking arm tight to the neck; use your other hand to stabilize and prevent defense; adjust angle as needed.
- Ensure the forearm sits across the neck with the elbow tucked, creating a tight carrier around the throat.
Finish
- Sit your hips toward the head, rotate slightly, and squeeze by pulling the choking arm across your chest while driving with the hips.
- Maintain control, watch for defense, and release when the opponent taps. For Gi, additional control with a lapel or sleeve grip is possible.
Application
Scenarios
- How to apply during transitions in live rolling; a staple in jiu jitsu moves and bjj techniques; effective from top control in Gi and No-Gi.
Gi vs No-Gi
- In Gi, leverage the lapel or sleeve as supplementary control; in No-Gi rely on precise arm position and grips.
Mistakes
Common Mistakes
- Telegraphing the grip, losing control of the head, leaving space for escapes, or failing to secure a proper lock.
Tips
Practice Focus
- Prioritize neck control, elbow tight to the body, and hip pressure; practice step-by-step; note this is an advanced technique and not beginner-friendly.
