Transition to Kesa Gatame
H2
H3 Key Steps
Step 1: From side control, anchor a solid base and frame around the head, keeping the hips heavy to discourage escapes.
Step 2: Pivot your hips and torso to face the opponent's head. Slide your far knee across their chest to isolate the near arm and create space for the wrap.
Step 3: Thread your top arm around their head and secure a scarf grip. Gi: grip the collar or sleeve to stabilize; No-Gi: trap the neck and secure the near arm with your other hand.
Step 4: Sit up and shift your weight over their upper torso, then slide your leg over to complete the pin. Keep your head tucked and chest tight against theirs.
H3 Application
- This sequence is a core progression in jiujitsu moves, commonly used after you control the head from side control to improve pinning and set up further bjj techniques or submissions. It works in both gi and no-gi; ideal for intermediate practitioners while also approachable for motivated beginners through step-by-step drilling.
H3 Mistakes
- Failing to control the head and neck, allowing escapes.
- Losing hip pressure or balance during the turn.
- Neglecting to secure the near arm; giving space for frames or bridges.
- Over-rotation or too much weight on the wrong side.
H3 Tips
- Keep your head close to their ear and your chin tucked.
- Use the far knee to block hip escape and stabilize the pin.
- Drill slowly with a partner; progress to live sparring.
