Transition to North-South
From Side Control to North-South Position
Key Steps
Step 1: Establish control and base
- In side control, maintain tight chest‑to‑chest pressure and use the near forearm to control the head/neck while posting on the far hip.
Step 2: Create space and anchor
- Plant the near knee on the mat near their hip to anchor your base and stabilize your angle as you prepare to move.
Step 3: Pivot around the head
- Keep your weight heavy on the opponent, rotate your hips toward their head, and walk your torso around the head by guiding your far leg around behind their head.
Step 4: Finish in the North-South
- Once aligned, drop your chest over theirs, shift weight forward, and settle into the North-South position with your weight layered and your knees pinning their hips.
Application
- This is a fundamental top‑control transition in jiu jitsu moves that opens better attack options (chokes, pins) from the top. Gi or No‑Gi friendly and approachable for beginners.
Mistakes
- Losing the near‑side control or head frame.
- Creating gaps with hips or posting too high, telegraphing the transition.
- Ending with poor weight distribution or tangled legs.
Tips
- Keep your weight over the chest and hips; stay tight and low.
- Use the knee and shin to frame and guide the move; practice step-by-step to build muscle memory.
- Drill slowly, then increase speed as control improves.
