Transition to Mount
From knee on belly to full mount
Key Steps
Step 1: Setup and base
- Keep a solid base with the knee on the chest and the opposite leg posted on the mat; control the opponent's hips or upper body to limit frames.
Step 2: Create space and angle
- Shift weight forward slightly, rotate hips toward the side you plan to mount, and keep your chest over the center to prevent escapes.
Step 3: Thread the leg
- Pivot on the knee on the chest and swing the free leg over the opponent's torso, staying tight to their body.
Step 4: Sink into mount
- Clear the leg, drop the knee across their chest, and settle into full mount; square your hips and establish a strong base.
Application
- This is a fundamental top-transition in jiujitsu moves and bjj techniques, usable in Gi and No-Gi to progress from knee-on-belly toward a controlling mount position.
- It sets up attacks and improves positional control with steady, step-by-step execution.
Mistakes
Common mistakes
- Bouncing weight or letting the base collapse when swinging the leg.
- Failing to control the head or far arm, inviting a bridge or escape.
- Rushing the transition and losing balance or exposing the back.
Tips
Drills and practice
- Practice slowly from partner drills, progress to tempo, keep your hips tucked and weight centered.
Gi and No-Gi considerations
- Gi: use grips on collar/sleeve to aid control; No-Gi: use shoulder/belt grips to anchor and guide the pass.
